In the "Pandemic: My Country Is On Its Knees by Stephen Lewis", has described the pain and suffering of the people in Africa and what they face every single day. Where grandmothers bury their children before they die, and women having HIV/AIDS living as sex workers. Lewis fell in love with the country and the African people, though he hopes that one day the Africa will rejoice in a time when families are whole and funerals are rare, and hope that the present will one day reunite with the best of the past and finally bring rejoice to its' people.
The purpose of this essay is being educated, and know about to the other developing countries, and also being grateful and bless of what we have already. The essay has shown me that the less unfortunate people has to go through so much pain and suffer in their everyday lives. Children dieing from malnutrition, AIDS, and virus has brought my attention that we do sometimes take things for granted because we do not know what we have until we have lost it. Reading this essay ables readers to think about their life, and the way they are living and seeing what kind of blessing they already have and showing gratitude for it. Lewis has explained in his essay that we all live in one world and to make it a better place is to help others find hope to a better life, because without having the source of people helping people their would be no help for Africa or the other third world countries in our world.
Lewis has brought his experience into this essay by telling his life story. From dropping out of the University of Toronto, attending The World Assembly of Youth, going to Ghana and seeing most of all the African countries, and falling in love with the people. This made me see through the vision of his eyes the different seniors he went through and the heartbreaking stories of beloved mothers and grandmothers that told him stories about their children s' and grandchildren s. When seeing the suffering and pain of the people he described, "the throat and reduced them to spectral caricatures of their former selves." and how he was "completely unprepared for the pervasiveness of death...and [has] shaken [him] [to] the core.". Those description has brought my mind by describing of what his emotion was feeling and how he was heart ached from the people. This should bring the readers to its shivers because not a lot of people has experienced this, and hopefully will not in the future, but by reading it, we should have a detailed imaged of what goes on everyday in Africa and to the people living in the country.
All in all, the description of this essay has brought tears to my eyes on what goes on with other developing countries in the world, and how every support is needed for people to have a better life in these countries. Reading and experiencing the depth of this essay has brought my attention to be thankful and be grateful of what I already have because not so much people have it around the world. Lewis showed me, and hopefully to the readers his experience of Africa and hope to set an example for people who is already bless with so much things and to be humble from their blessings. I do hope that "the memories of what the continent used to be, and the conviction that the present will one day reunite with the best of the past." for a magnificent continent called Africa.
After you have read the Pandemic by Stephen Lewis, and how heart ache you have been, would you ever have the consideration of adopting a child or go to volunteer with PLWA group in Africa?
